With the aim of promoting modern Arakanese poetry, a poem festival kicked off in the Arakan State town of Rathedaung on Saturday.

Organised by local poets in Rathedaung, the two-day poem festival, the first of its kind in Arakan State, features modern Arakan poem recitation, talks and reading monographs on modern Arakan poetry.

“We have organised this event for poets to share their knowledge about poetry; encourage them to write more poems; share their experiences about difficulties in publishing their poems in black and white; provide recommendations and solutions; broaden the society of Arakanese poets; and promote development of modern poetry,” said one of the organisers, poet Wun Yoe.

Poet Myint Lwin, who attended the festival, said he believes the festival will provide new insights for young people who love poetry.

Female poet May Thargi said she was attending the festival to socialise with other poets.

“I have come here to recite poems because I love poems, and want to meet other poets in person,” she told DMG.

Modern poetry is said to be growing increasingly popular in Arakan State. A first-of-its-kind modern poetry award was bestowed in Arakan State by the Arakanese Literature Development Foundation in Ramree Township last month.
